Acting

This module offers a range of sessions: in movement-based, vocal, and textual practices. This will help you develop essential skills as an actor or performer, building a solid foundation for further exploration in Year 2.

In year one, you’ll develop techniques in improvisation and expressivity. You will have specialist tuition in essential acting techniques including Meyerhold’s Biomechanics, yoga, the Alexander Technique, Animal Studies, and Clowning. You’ll also undertake voice training. This would involve using techniques from Cicely Berry and Patsy Rodenburg, as well as explore the acting techniques of Stanislavski and approaches to performing Shakespeare.

Throughout this module, you will work with a professional director in preparation for a full-scale theatre production and perform to a public audience. Work may include contemporary approaches to classical texts, devised work, or non-western theatre. You’ll also take on responsibilities for production elements with professional technical support. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your audition and rehearsal techniques, as well as your understanding of the actor-director relationship.

This module encourages you to make psycho-physical, imaginative, and intellectual connections. It will involve the ‘rediscovery of theatricality’ in the 20th and 21st centuries by modernist and postmodernist theatre artists. You will explore Ensemble Acting and Viewpoints as key approaches. You will also foster a deeper understanding of collaborative performance.

You will explore contemporary texts and the role of the actor in the digital realm. This module develops skills related to theatre, radio, television, and voice acting. It will familiarise you with the grammar encountered in these environments. You will practice acting techniques used for radio, voice acting and acting for the camera and digital media. You will explore differing acting styles, microphone techniques, camera awareness, shots and angles. In addition, you will practice audition techniques including self-tapes.

You'll work on a directed production and perform to a public audience in this module. You'll be expected to put into practice the relevant acting techniques acquired over the previous years. This module will focus on analysis and understanding of the text and techniques. You will explore the play and character alongside the actor/director relationship.

In this module you'll produce a piece of work to be shown to the public, put many acting techniques into practice. You'll gain the opportunity to investigate the concept of the actor as a creator and develop a creative or performance skill.

This module will prepare you for entry into the acting profession. You'll learn the structure of life as an actor and become familiar with organisations such as Equity, Spotlight. The module covers essential skills. This includes casting and audition techniques, industry showcases, creating showreels and voice reels. We will help you to create a digital showcase including professional headshots, showreel and voice-reel material. You will receive one-to-one industry liaison mentoring. Alongside this, you will have guidance on financial matters to aid you as you transition into the acting profession.
