Football Science & Rehabilitation

In this module, you’ll gain a critical understanding of what causes football injuries and how they differ across key groups. This includes youth players at different stages of development, female athletes, and senior professionals. You’ll explore injury mechanisms, risk factors, and screening tools used in elite settings, combining theory with hands-on practice. By the end, you’ll be ready to make informed, evidence-based decisions to identify injury risks early.

In this module, you’ll develop the applied skills and scientific knowledge to assess, programme, and optimise physical performance in football. You’ll explore performance profiling, periodisation, and the development of key physical qualities such as speed, power, strength, agility, and endurance. You’ll also cover athlete monitoring, population-specific considerations, and injury risk mitigation. This will enable you to design evidence-based programmes tailored to the demands of the game.

In this module, you’ll gain a holistic, evidence-based understanding of injury rehabilitation and return-to-performance strategies in football. You’ll explore the physical, psychological, and contextual demands of rehab - from acute injury management to high-performance reintegration. With a focus on population-specific challenges, you’ll critically evaluate multi-disciplinary approaches and apply tailored interventions to optimise recovery, readiness, and long-term performance.

In this module, you’ll develop the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking to engage with current debates, innovations, and research priorities in football science and rehabilitation. Through seminars, journal clubs, and research workshops, you’ll explore emerging areas of study and prepare for your dissertation. You’ll learn to identify feasible research questions, understand methodologies, and build skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis. By the end, you'll be able to design and deliver impactful research in real-world football environments.

This module helps you identify your own coaching behaviours, critically reflect on your current practice, and evaluate your coaching philosophy to develop more effective approaches. You'll also focus on building strong coach-athlete relationships for successful outcomes.

On this module you'll plan, complete, and present a case study or research project. You'll choose from a case study portfolio, original research, a review or a meta-analysis. You’ll also apply rigorous methods, demonstrate critical thinking, and produce work suitable for publication in sport science or clinical practice.
