Overview

If you are an athlete we can offer opportunities for you to be supported with your aspiration of maintaining your playing career whilst also studying for a high-quality degree.

Who can apply?

You’re eligible if:

  • You’re studying full-time or part-time on an undergraduate or postgraduate course in the 2026/27 academic year
  • Part-time students may receive a reduced (pro rata) award
  • You compete in a sport that’s part of BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) or BUCS Para Sport

Priority is given to athletes in our six focal sports:

  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • Golf
  • Rugby League
  • Table Tennis
  • Women’s Football

Awards

Gold level

Up to £5,000 cash support plus a support package worth around £2,000:

  • Free sports facility membership
  • Free club membership
  • Gold kit package
  • Physiotherapy/sports therapy
  • Group based Strength and Conditioning sessions
  • Group based session in Lifestyle, Nutrition and Psychology support sessions
  • Dual career flexibility (academic flexibility around performance needs)

Silver level award

Up to £2,000 cash support plus a support package worth over £1,000:

  • Free sports facility membership
  • Free club membership
  • Silver kit package
  • Physiotherapy/sports therapy
  • Group based Strength and Conditioning sessions
  • Group Lifestyle, Nutrition and Psychology support sessions
  • Dual career flexibility (academic flexibility around performance needs)

Bronze level award

Up to £500 cash support plus a support package worth approx. £750:

  • Free sports facility membership
  • Free club membership
  • Bronze kit package
  • Physiotherapy/sports therapy
  • Group Strength and Conditioning sessions
  • Group Lifestyle, Nutrition and Psychology support sessions
  • Dual career flexibility (academic flexibility around performance needs)

How to apply

  • Fill out the application form and provide evidence of your sporting achievements (ideally from the last 12 months).
  • You don’t need to meet every criterion, but your application must show your current performance level.
  • Applications without evidence won’t be considered.

Criteria and evidence needed

Include evidence of your sporting level and achievements from the last 12 months. This could be:

  • Rankings
  • Competition results
  • Video footage
  • Performance stats.

Sports scholarships are in high demand and places are limited. Therefore you should apply as soon as you receive your offer from the University.

The selection process is based on the University’s strategic priorities. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee an award. The panel meets regularly to review applications and make decisions.

Deadlines

  • Final deadline: 3 June 2026 (applications are reviewed periodically until this date)
  • Early submission deadline: 22 March 2026 (if you apply by this date, you’ll hear back by 1 May 2026)
  • Applications submitted after 22 March will receive decisions by 31 July 2026
  • If budget allows, a late application window may open from 13 - 31 August 2026
