Catherine Mason
Cat teaches on the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship, and MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) courses. She has a special interest in musculoskeletal injuries, particularly those related to mountain and fell running, and more recently has developed a special interest in postpartum running. She also has experience in the management of head and neck cancer. Cat is a keen fell runner herself and until recently volunteered for Mountain Rescue in the Lake District.
Cat has been part of the development of the new BSc Physiotherapy course and MSc course, aiming to incorporate a more holistic approach to teaching new physiotherapists. She began her physiotherapy career at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, working in various roles as a newly qualified physiotherapist before specialising in the surgical department. This included working in burns and plastics, where she was seconded for two years treating hand injuries and reconstructions, critical care medicine, and general surgery.
During this time, Cat identified a gap in care for patients with head and neck cancer and successfully developed a physiotherapy role to support them. She went on to specialise in critical care medicine and head and neck cancer for five years.
Cat later transitioned into trauma and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. After a short period, she left the NHS to pursue an MSc in Advanced Physiotherapy and began working in private practice, treating sporting injuries and allowing greater flexibility around her studies.
In 2025, Cat will begin her professional doctorate, continuing to develop her academic and clinical expertise.
