Federal Direct Loan Annual and Aggregate Loan limits
The amount in Federal Direct loan funds that you are eligible to borrow each academic year is limited by the following factors:
- Your study level
- Whether you are a Dependent or an Independent student
- Your financial need
- Your Cost of Attendance
You cannot borrow more than your financial need or the Cost of Attendance.
The following annual and aggregate loan limits apply to Federal Direct Loans:
How aid eligibility is determined
Federal Direct Subsidised and Unsubsidised loans are available to eligible students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web. These federal student aid programs are offered through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program to assist with educational expenses.
For undergraduate students, eligibility for Direct Subsidised Loans, Direct Unsubsidised Loans, or a combination of both is determined based on financial need.
How much you can borrow: Cost of Attendance
Each academic year, the University establishes standard student budgets which are used to calculate Cost of Attendance (COA) estimates for awarding financial aid.
The budgets reflect typical student expenses and consist of the following components:
- Direct educational costs such as tuition, fees, books and supplies
- Indirect (maintenance) costs such as accommodation, board, travel, miscellaneous personal expenses
- Living expenses, which are based on the typical cost of living for students in the United Kingdom during the academic year
How to apply for US Federal Direct Loans
Adverse credit history and endorser addendum
If an applicant for a Direct PLUS Loan has an adverse credit history, they may not qualify for the loan. In such cases, the applicant may need an endorser, who does not have an adverse credit history, to secure the PLUS Loan. The endorser cannot be the student for whom the loan is being requested.
Disbursement of Direct Loan funds
In accordance with US regulation 34 CFR § 668.164, the University is required to disburse Direct Loan funds in multiple instalments that coincide with scheduled term dates. For a loan period based on enrolment across three terms, three disbursements will be made, one at the start of each term. Please note that loans cannot be disbursed before the scheduled date.
To be in receipt of each disbursement, students must be:
- Enrolled
- Present in the UK
- Continue to meet the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy in accordance with regulation 34 CFR § 668.34.
Loan disbursements are subject to origination fees imposed by the US Government, which are non-negotiable.
In accordance with US regulation 34 CFR § 668.165 the University will:
- First apply loan funds toward tuition fees
- Followed by accommodation fees if you reside in University of Central Lancashire accommodation, provided there are sufficient funds available for these deductions.
- Any residual amount will then be paid to the student.
If there are insufficient funds, or if the current fee values are incorrect, students will be required to cover any remaining balance.
To receive any residual payment, students must have submitted bank details to the University prior to the disbursement. Before each disbursement, the University will send students an email notification detailing the disbursement amounts and instructions on how to provide bank details for any residual payment. Failure to provide bank details to the University will result in Federal Student Aid funds being returned to the US Department of Education.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
The University of Central Lancashire is required by US Federal Law (34CFR 668.34) to define and enforce standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for students who wish to access Title IV Federal Student Aid. These guidelines have been established to encourage students to progress and successfully complete the academic programme for which aid is received.
Although the University has an institutional policy for standard academic achievement, the SAP policy relates specifically to US students in receipt of Title IV funding. It should be noted that the University's standards for all enrolled students on the same course are the same regardless of the student’s source of funding.
The University's general policies and regulations including Academic Regulations can be found on this webpage: University of Central Lancashire’s general policies and regulations, including Academic Regulations.
Students receiving US Federal Loans must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress, including attendance and engagement as stipulated in the University's Academic Regulations, throughout the loan period in order to receive all of the instalments of their loans for that period and in order to continue receiving loans in subsequent loan periods, where applicable.
This definition of SAP may be different from other University policies and is not a replacement for the University's Academic Regulations. Furthermore, satisfactory academic progression to retain Title IV Direct Loans is entirely separate from the academic requirements to remain on a programme of study and does not guarantee the outcome of a programme.
Students who receive Title IV Federal Student Aid will be evaluated at the end of each term. This evaluation process will consider your progress under the following criteria:
- Qualitative (grade-based) measurement
- Quantitative (time-based) measurement
To receive Title IV Federal Student Aid, you must meet minimum standards for both the above-mentioned components while simultaneously adhering to academic progress rules and UK Immigration legislation. Quantitative and Qualitative are both measured cumulatively.
