A Blackpool student has overcome a series of mental health challenges and personal trauma to graduate from University.

Kamil Figura, who grew up in Poland and moved to the seaside town in 2011 aged 9 not knowing a word of English, was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Financial Investigation from the University of Central Lancashire at a graduation ceremony in Preston.

The 22-year-old had moments where he didn’t think he’d get this far. He considered taking his own life following years of trauma caused by an abusive mother whilst he was growing up in Poland and having to face other challenges since moving to the UK.

“I am relieved and proud to be standing here at graduation,” he said. “I’ve dealt with a multitude of very personal issues, including dealing with depression, the breakdown of a romantic relationship, starting a new job, working full time and trying to maintain my studies. I was also diagnosed with ADHD after a long time of questioning myself and knowing something wasn’t right.”

Despite the difficult circumstances, Kamil received support from his tutor and made the most of his studies.

He said: “Fraud and money laundering is so common and is frequently on the news so it’s a subject that interests me. I enjoyed applying the theory to real life cases and felt supported by my tutor Janet, who makes the subject a pleasure to learn because she is so passionate about it.”

The Mereside resident, who currently works as an estimator for Gilberts Ltd in Blackpool, also found time to write a book. This is Not a Suicide Note, was penned when Kamil was at his lowest ebb and helped him work through his traumas as he shared his experiences.

“I wanted to bring an understanding of mental health issues that the society seems to ignore,” he said.

“I hope this book can help people who struggle with mental health and show them that there are other people out there who feel the same. If at least one person reads this and thinks ‘if he can go through all this and still do what he does, there’s hope for me,’ then I’ve achieved my goal.”
