Job details

By joining the University of Lancashire, you’ll become part of a thriving community of talent that’s united by a shared vision – to transform the lives of our students and create prosperity and opportunity in the communities we serve. Every colleague has a vital role to play in helping us achieve this vision.

About the role:

The School of Art and Media is seeking an experienced and visionary Lecturer in Critical & Contextual Studies to join our dynamic Fashion and Textiles programme. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside a talented and diverse team of educators, contributing to a vibrant academic environment that values interdisciplinary thinking and creative exploration.

In this pivotal role, you will guide students through the historical, theoretical, and cultural dimensions of fashion—cultivating critical awareness and contextual understanding that enrich their creative practice. We are looking for a candidate with a robust academic foundation in philosophy, art history, material culture, and design, coupled with a deep passion for examining fashion’s influence on identity, society, and politics.

In addition, the post will require the candidate to support recruitment activities that will lead to travel opportunities and require someone with a passion for their subject area and strong presentation and communication skills. Like all staff in the arts, you would be expected to get involved in the development of industry contacts and potential employers and other external organisations to develop the course’s employability potential and reputation.

 About you:

The successful candidate will have teaching experience in a higher education environment and an undergraduate degree and postgraduate qualification or equivalent in relevant areas. In addition, you should be IT literate and be able to record student attendance, upload the necessary coursework to the university network, and contact students through digital channels.

Applicants must meet all essential criteria on the person specification to be considered for interview. This position is based in Preston.

 What we can offer you:

Our people are our most important asset. We’ll encourage you to make the most of your talents and continually develop your skills and knowledge. As well as realising your career ambitions, you’ll be making a positive difference to other people’s lives. We also offer a fantastic package of rewards and lifestyle benefits – from an attractive annual leave entitlement to access to a comprehensive employee benefits platform.

We are proud to be a diverse, multicultural university. We are committed to building a truly inclusive culture where diversity is championed.
