Join us to explore the risks of non-fatal strangulation and suffocation and improve safeguarding across frontline services.
The University of Lancashire are proud to present this conference in partnership with the Pennine Lancashire Community Safety Partnership, NHS Integrated Care Board, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire, the Lancashire Constabulary, and the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime (LANPAC).
We warmly welcome frontline professionals to attend and get involved in the conversation. This includes those in emergency services, healthcare, social care. Those in roles responsible for organisational policies and procedures are also welcome.
Why this matters? Non-fatal strangulation carries significant safeguarding risks and occurs across a range of contexts:
- Physical altercations: From incidents involving children in playgrounds to violence in night-life settings.
- Sexual strangulation: Increasingly normalised and promoted via social media. A behaviour becoming more prevalent among young people.
- Domestic abuse: Greatly increases the risk to victims when used as part of a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour.
This partnership initiative aims to:
- Raise awareness of the dangers and potential consequences of strangulation.
- Bring about improvements to policy and procedures in agency responses.
- Dispel myths around so-called “safe” strangulation.
