Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at those interested in a clinical dental technician qualification. Clinical dental technicians work as part of the wider dental team. They use their technical and clinical skills to provide dentures directly to patients, according to a dentist’s prescription.
You will develop a wide range of knowledge and skills in clinical dental technology. Full support will be provided on this course to help you reach your full potential as a CDT.
Additionally, you will apply the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to uphold professional standards. You must be in suitable employment to complete this course.
What you'll do
- The course is subject to approval by the General Dental Council. GDC approval means upon successful completion of this course you will be able to register with the GDC as a Clinical Dental Technician.
- You will take part in innovative learning methods, which will be a mix of blended learning and practical sessions. You'll also treat your own patients (under supervision) at our on campus dental clinic in Preston.
- Develop digital CADCAM skills needed to provide high-quality digital dental technology solutions. You’ll be ready to make a real difference to the profession, advancing professional knowledge and best practice.

Future careers
Upon completion of the apprenticeship, students will be able to apply to the GDC for registration as a clinical dental technician.
Entry requirements
Minimum qualifications:
- Applicants must be a General Dental Council (GDC) registered dental technician
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance and subject to Occupational Health screening are required
- An Apprenticeship Employment Contract with a minimum of 30 hours full time employment per week is required
- Employer willing to agree to the terms of employing an apprentice, including supporting at least 6 hours off the job training per week as an average (as a mixture of on campus attendance and distance learning, including some block learning)
- Valid residency and right to work in England up to the end of EPA of the apprenticeship
- An interview will be used to select from candidates that have the appropriate entry criteria.
All offers of a place on this course are subject to satisfactory health screening. It is important to note that should your health screening not be satisfactory your offer of a place on this course may be withdrawn.
If you have already enrolled on the course prior to completion of your health screening, or if your health screening clearance is revoked or changes during the course, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started.

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, this may include children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB).
