Classes are expected to be delivered face-to-face in a classroom setting on the Preston Campus.

Year-long courses

• Two-hour language class per week
• 24 weeks including assessment

Introduction to British Sign Language is available as a year-long or semester-long module (12 weeks, 4 hours per week).

Semester-long

• Two-hour language class per week
• 12 weeks including assessment

Languages are available in up to six different levels.

Our courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which defines language proficiency from A1 (beginner) to C1 (advanced).

Beginners (A1)

• For complete beginners with no prior knowledge.
• You’ll learn everyday expressions, basic phrases, and simple sentences.
• By the end, you'll be able to introduce yourself, share personal details, and understand short, simple texts.

Post-Beginners (A2)

• For those who have completed beginners (A1) or equivalent.
• You’ll understand common phrases and short texts on familiar topics.
• You’ll be able to handle simple conversations and write short, linked sentences using basic connectors.

Intermediate (B1)

• For those who have completed post-beginners (A2) or equivalent.
• You’ll understand the main ideas in conversations and texts related to work, study, leisure, and current issues.
• You’ll learn to describe experiences, give opinions, and write connected paragraphs.

Advanced (B2)

• For those who have completed Intermediate or equivalent.
• You’ll understand complex texts and speak with fluency and spontaneity, including interacting with native speakers.
• You’ll learn to write clear, detailed texts and explain viewpoints on various topics.

Advanced +1 (B2/B2+)

• For those who have completed Advanced or equivalent.
• You’ll communicate effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.
• You’ll produce well-structured, detailed writing and use a wide range of grammar accurately.

Advanced +2 (C1)

• For those who have completed Advanced +1 or equivalent.
• You’ll speak and write with fluency and precision on a wide range of topics.
• You’ll develop critical analysis skills and apply broad knowledge to discussions and written work.

If you're a current student, you may be able to take a language module as an elective as part of your course. Certificates are also available as an additional qualification for all students, staff, alumni and members of the public.

Certificates

• You can apply using our online application form
• The deadline for enrolment for the year-long courses was 3 October 2025
• The deadline for the semester two courses is 23 January 2026
• Members of the public must provide photographic identification (driving licence, passport, etc.) on request
• Members of staff must provide their staff card

Current students (elective module)

• If you’re an undergraduate taking a language module as an elective, it counts as part of your course.
• No extra payment required.

Certificate

• Full fee: £495
• Discounted fee: £259

Discounts available to:

• Postgraduate or undergraduate students without elective options
• University staff
• Alumni
• Those in receipt of the state pension

Payment must be made upon registration. Before completing your enrolment, please be sure that you do wish to do the course, as fees will still apply if you withdraw.

Year-long courses

• Withdrawal within four weeks of course start date: refund applies
• Withdrawal after four weeks of course start date: no refund applies

Semester-long courses

• Withdrawal within two weeks of course start date: refund applies
• Withdrawal after two weeks of course start date: no refund applies
