Feeling stagnant in her career, Kyra was ready for change. As a Communities and Volunteers Officer in the arts, she was already offering informal support to colleagues and volunteers but wanted to develop her skills formally. She hoped the ILM Level 5 in Effective Coaching and Mentoring would give her “another string to my bow,” boost her confidence, and open the possibility of freelance work in the future.
Choosing to study with CVCL was an easy decision. Based in Preston and a University of Lancashire alumna, she valued the university’s reputation and saw the course as a way to grow her professional network and strengthen connections for potential partnership work.
A Journey of Learning and Self-Belief
The course began with nerves and self-doubt, but she quickly realised that all participants, no matter their background, were on a similar learning curve. The diversity of the group and the expertise of the teaching staff challenged her assumptions about what a coach or mentor “should” be.
She particularly valued learning about different coaching models, creating a personal action plan, and overcoming her fear of audio-recorded presentations — a skill she now plans to use in her own work. Practical coaching sessions, including with senior colleagues, pushed her out of her comfort zone but ultimately enhanced her listening skills, body language awareness, and ability to plan for positive outcomes.
“The qualification has helped me coach myself,” she explains, noting that she now feels more dynamic and confident in asking people if they want to take action, empowering them to explore their options.
Balancing Commitments and Overcoming Challenges
Juggling coursework with a full-time role wasn’t easy. She relied on positive self-talk, a clear study plan, and support from her manager, tutor Leona, and a course “buddy.” The camaraderie and resource-sharing through the Teams group and the accessible course materials — including audio recordings — made the learning more manageable.
Impact and Future Plans
Completing the ILM Level 5 has been transformative. Her confidence has grown, her professional skills have deepened, and her career horizons have expanded. She is updating her website to promote her coaching services, refreshing her LinkedIn profile, and exploring freelance opportunities. She has also begun volunteering as a mentor for people leaving prison, a role she had considered before but only now felt prepared to take on.
Her advice to others considering the qualification is clear:
“Think about it carefully — it’s hard work and you really have to want to help others. But if you’re ready, go for it and get cracking! The world needs you.”
