This summer, the University of Lancashire welcomed students from across the globe to its English Language Summer School. Running through July and August, the summer school offered the chance to improve language skills, make new friends, and experience life at a UK university.
Students spent their weekdays combining English lessons with themed activities designed to bring British culture to life. Music and Film week included a trip to Liverpool, where students explored the story of The Beatles. There, they also discovered the city’s influence on modern culture. During Art and Fashion week, the group headed to Manchester to experience its galleries, architecture and famous shopping districts.
When it came to British History week, students were welcomed into the stately home of Leighton Hall. There, they had owner Suzie Gillow Reynolds give a guided tour filled with stories spanning 500 years. The programme concluded with a Food and Drink themed week, where students sampled iconic dishes. Such delicacies included the traditional full English breakfast and the classic afternoon tea. The week was rounded off with a visit to the breath taking Lake District. Students were treated to stunning mountain and lake views that complemented the taste of British traditions.
For many, it was their first time abroad – but the friendly atmosphere and varied activities quickly helped them feel at home. “Even people who are not good at speaking English can enjoy the classes, so please give it a try,” said Taiga Ishimoto.

"You can make lots of friends and enjoyably learn practical English! All the teachers are kind and teach carefully, so I think you can really improve your language skills. Besides studying, there is also time for sightseeing, sports, and experiencing British culture, so you can have many different experiences! It’s a very fun program."

Alongside the learning, the summer school’s social programme gave students the chance to create new friendships. “In the summer program, you can make lots of friends and enjoyably learn practical English,” said Hanane Arita. Miko Shimabara agreed, adding: “Even if you can’t speak much English, the teachers give you lots of support, and you can become good friends with the others on the program!”
Students also appreciated the chance to experience British life beyond the classroom. “I was able to experience many things that I normally wouldn’t be able to in Japan. It’s also a great chance to learn about the culture and language of the UK,” said Miku Jinnai.
Himeno Shimabukuro emphasised the importance of making the most of every moment. “Three weeks is shorter than you might think, so in order to improve your English, it’s good to actively try to use it with the people around you. By spending that time intensively, I think your English will improve at least a little.”
With its welcoming campus in the friendly city of Preston, the University of Lancashire proved to be the perfect base for a mix of learning, culture, and travel. As Fuka Hayano put it: “Since it’s a rare chance to be in the UK, it’s important to prioritise what you want to do and enjoy it!”
Both students and teachers agreed it was a rewarding and unforgettable experience. The University is now looking forward to welcoming even more students in Summer 2026.
