Dentistry graduate Usama talks about helping dentists abroad

With an interest in Dentistry, Usama Riaz chose to study a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Lancashire.

Before studying at the University, Usama completed a BSc in Biomedical Sciences after completing work experience at a dental practice. Developing an interest in Dentistry, Usama then began the BDS Dental Surgery course.

After graduation, he undertook a one-year training programme in General Dental Practice and then worked as an Associate Dentist for the NHS. He later gained membership to the Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons, England and is currently undertaking a Masters in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute.

After receiving his Diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons, Usama has been an active member of the Dental Team for the UK charity, Humanity First. Together with other dentists, hygienists, and technicians, he travelled to The Gambia and Uganda. Here they passed on their skills and knowledge and provided assistance in dental matters to address the skills shortage in the country. He has made six such trips so far, and hopes to eventually visit annually to continue the support to local clinicians and help them become independent. Usama has also managed to fundraise over £20,000 for the Humanity First project.

"The University has a lot to offer. Its unique setup prepares you well for general practice and you’ll feel ready to start dental foundation training. You will appreciate this once you qualify and compare yourself with the other graduates."

Talking about this shortage in dental education, Usama said: “If a patient had a jaw infection or cyst in The Gambia, they would have to go to another country to have it treated. During the time we were there, we operated on three such patients. In Uganda, I have led the project myself and held two medical camps for people with lack of access to routine dental care. I have also visiting schools to teach the importance of dental health to children from a young age.”

Alongside this, Usama runs The White House Dental Practice in Surrey, which he hopes will enable him to continue supporting this charitable mission through his work.

When asked about what advice he would give to those wanting to do something similar, Usama said: “The University has a lot to offer. Its unique setup prepares you well for general practice and you’ll feel ready to start dental foundation training. You will appreciate this once you qualify and compare yourself with the other graduates.”
