What does a nutritionist do?

Nutritionists can work for the NHS. You might work with people who are overweight, underweight or experiencing symptoms like tiredness. You'll review their diet and explain how this might affect them. You'll advise on any changes they should make to their diet.

While this is a healthcare role, you won't carry out any diagnosis or tests. Nutritionists only educate and advise. You may refer the patient to other medical specialists for further treatment, such as a dietitian.

You could work in other public sector roles. You might educate the public about nutrition through different initiatives and community groups. You may advise on public policies, such as food labels or the sugar tax.

You could also work in private practice as a nutritionist. You will have your own client base who come to you for nutritional advice. This is normally towards a particular goal, like fat loss or muscle gain.

What's the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian?

Nutritionists aren't a regulated profession, but dietitians are. That means anyone can refer to themselves as a nutritionist, but there are strict rules about who can be a dietitian.

Nutritionists can only educate and advise people about nutrition. Dietitians can diagnose and treat a number of dietary issues. This includes allergies, obesity, eating disorders and more. Find out how to become a dietitian in our guide.

While nutritionists aren't regulated, you can join the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists to use the title Registered Nutritionist. This can help you progress in your career.

Do I need a degree to become a nutritionist?

You don't need a degree to become a nutritionist, as nutritionists aren't a regulated profession. However, you do need a degree to become a Registered Nutritionist. Most employers will only hire a Registered Nutritionist. A degree can also advance your knowledge and skills, making you a better nutritionist.
