Dr Luke Johnson
Luke successfully passed his PhD in Summer 2025 for his thesis titled 'Ecocide: Tracing the Process from Concept to Courtroom.' With research expertise in environmental law, Luke will now be teaching across a range of programs including the LLB, MProf and the Degree Apprenticeship.
Luke has published on areas relating to public awareness of environmental issues and legislation. He has also written about conservation frameworks and the definition and operationalisation of the crime of ecocide, the latter being the subject of his PhD thesis. He is experienced in a range of research methods and has taught various subjects including Criminal Law, Tort, Human Rights, and Criminology.
Luke undertook an Integrated Masters in Law at the University of Northumbria from 2017-2021. During this time, he was awarded the David Gray Solicitor Prize for the Best Performance in the Student Law Office for his Policy Clinic work on habitat conservation. This work introduced Luke to environmentalism, and from there he sought to undertake a PhD in Law. During his doctoral studies, Luke began his role as an Associate Lecturer, where he discovered his love of teaching. From there, he decided to pursue a career in lecturing.
