Laura Bamford
Laura is a lecturer in animal and veterinary sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine, and course lead for the BSc (Hons) Bioverinary Sciences degree. She has experience with a range of species including large animal, small animal and exotics. Laura's specialist interests include assessing animal welfare and captive wild animal husbandry and welfare.
Graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Equine Science Laura worked practically in the equine industry in equine therapy and rehabilitation with veterinary referrals and sports performance horses, and assisted reproductive technologies. She then moved into education as a husbandry technician and practical handling instructor working with a range of taxa including small and large mammals, herptiles, invertebrates and avian species, progressing to Curriculum Manager in Animal Studies overseeing a large educational animal collection containing a variety of domestic and exotic species including captive wild animals, alongside co-ordinating and supervising visiting undergraduate research projects at the collection. Laura joined the University in 2023 as part of the lecturing team in the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Laura has worked under a Natural England research permit at Formby Nature Reserve, Lancashire, investigating the conservation of native Red Squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), with a particular focus on optimal non-invasive DNA collection techniques to analyse genetic diversity in fragmented populations.
