Kris Phillips
Kris primarily delivers anatomy teaching to the undergraduate Medicine and Dentistry programmes, as well as the Physician Associate programme. He graduated with an Anatomy BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Glasgow and continued there as an Anatomy Demonstrator after his degree. After undertaking management work outside academia, Kris joined the University of Central Lancashire in 2020. He has a strong interest in the current and future possibilities of anatomical education, and a growing curiosity in comparative anatomy.
Kris is the anatomy lead for the Physician Associates programme, along with leading teaching blocks in the MBBS programme. He is the primary lead for the Cardiorespiratory and Genitourinary blocks for MBBS Year 1, and the lead for the Core, Genitourinary, Musculoskeletal, and Cardiorespiratory blocks for MBBS Year 2. Kris also occasionally assists with teaching on the dental programmes.
Kris incorporates 3D software wherever possible in his teaching to help students visualise anatomy, as well as giving a clinical context and focus to subject areas to aid their understanding and relate form to function. He also employs additional methods to aid students learning such as frequent quizzes, revision sessions, and summary videos.
While undertaking his Anatomy degree at Glasgow, Kris became interested in gross anatomy through dissection in his 3rd and 4th year. During 4th year, his honours project was based around comparative anatomy - looking at the Morphological Comparison and Distinction of Domestic Sheep and Roe Deer: A Study of Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar Vertebrae. This spurred a passion for comparative anatomy, looking further into both human and animal anatomy, developing an interest in veterinary medicine alongside human medicine and the One Health approach.
Throughout Kris's career he has been keenly interested in training and developing others, both in his management roles and through academia.
Kris worked as an Anatomy Demonstrator at the University of Glasgow, teaching anatomy to Medical, Dental, and Life Science students at a variety of levels. Alongside this and beyond, he was in management roles within the retail sector. In these roles he was working for large retailers in store management teams developing staff and members of the management team, as well as leading and motivating them on a daily basis.
