Jonathan Flynn
With over 20 years’ experience in education, Jonathan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with expertise in learning and assessment. Jonathan's work focuses on innovative curriculum design, student engagement, and authentic assessment in health professions education. Through collaboration with colleagues and clinical partners, Jonathan enhances the student learning experience and supervises postgraduate projects related to professional development.
Jonathan has published across physiotherapy education, clinical practice, and health professions learning, with work spanning assessment, posture, pain, and rehabilitation. Their early research included evaluating preceptorship schemes in partnership with the NHS and exploring gaming technologies for student learning. Contributions include articles for The Conversation, Train, and peer-reviewed journals, alongside chapters in the Oxford Handbook of Rehabilitation Medicine. Jonathan has also presented widely, from CPD conferences to invited talks, and continues to develop scholarship linking research, teaching, and professional practice.
Jonathan has extensive experience in physiotherapy education across several higher education institutions, contributing as a programme leader, educator, and curriculum developer. They have acted as an external examiner at five universities, providing independent oversight of academic standards and assessment processes, and have led revalidation and accreditation exercises to ensure programmes meet professional and regulatory requirements.
Jonathan has delivered invited lectures, workshops, and keynote presentations nationally and internationally, including sessions on research-informed teaching, innovative assessment strategies, and professional development for health professions educators.
They have collaborated with NHS trusts and healthcare providers on clinical education projects, integrating simulation, haptic technology, and evidence-based learning approaches into curricula. In addition to teaching and leadership roles, Jonathan has contributed to the development of postgraduate research projects and professional development initiatives, mentoring colleagues and students alike. Their expertise in learning, assessment, and curriculum innovation has informed institutional strategies, quality assurance, and professional practice, making them a key advisor across higher education and clinical education settings.
