Helen Hewertson
Helen Hewertson is a Senior Lecturer in Humanities and Social Science. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy who has taught at various levels and to learners with various abilities and ages. She is course leader on the Foundation Year programme in the School, and is module leader for several modules. Helen has supervised Psychology dissertations and is a module leader for Sociology. She is involved in the Education research group and her main publications are around educational research and equity and how this intersects with psychology and sociology. She is also interested in media representation and culture. Her current research is on transitions to university and the strengths mature students bring to Higher Education.
Helen's interests and teaching experience are varied. She teaches study skills, critical thinking, research methods and digital literacy for the foundation year. She is module leader for the sociology modules Media and Culture, and Sociology of Social Movements. She has been asked to guest lecture on anime, gender in sci-fi, as well as stereotypes and representation in the media. Helen has also taught sessions for sociology on participatory action research. She has published around research-informed teaching, curriculum development, educational technology, and intersectional imposter syndrome.
Helen is on the steering group of the Centre for Education and Research Scholarship. She previously chaired the Pedagogic Research Forum (PRF) for 10 years and is involved with the annual CCL Festival of Learning conference.
