Bethan Sheppard-Cook
Bethan is a small animal vet who has worked in general practice since graduating in 2013. She has undertaken a certificate in advanced practice with a view of taking further examination in her area of interest, dermatology. With a passion for learning and ensuring the health and wellbeing of her patients, a role in academia at the School is a perfect opportunity to foster this attitude in future veterinary surgeons.
Bethan's current role at the University is as a lecturer in feline medicine and clinical skills. The role is designed to ensure a feline focus in regards to general practice is represented throughout the course. Bringing experience in clinical practice and a particular interest in medicine and dermatology, the goal is to pass on this knowledge with a particular focus on animal welfare.
After qualifying in 2013 from the Royal Veterinary College, Bethan has undertaken eleven years in small animal practice. This has included working for both independent and private practice and a period of locum work. In this time, an interest in medicine and dermatology developed resulting in further study to complete a certificate in advanced practice with the University of Liverpool. Throughout this career, Bethan has focused on maximising animal welfare and building a large client base due to understanding the importance of communication skills. Undertaking years as a branch manager meant adapting a variety of communication styles and assuming a supportive role. Working with students was introduced when doing a guest lecture on the pharmacy course in 'prescribing veterinary medicines' at the University of Huddersfield. With these experiences, Bethan was keen to advance her career into the area of academia to untie a passion for learning and veterinary as a career choice.
