Jim Fowler
Jim is a Senior Lecturer in Fire Studies and the Course Leader for our BSc (Hons) Fire and Leadership studies and the Advanced Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment. Jim teaches on a wide range of fire modules covering aspects of Fire Safety, Operational Firefighting and Hazards & Risk Assessment. Jim's current areas of interest are enhancing fire safety knowledge and experience leading from the Grenfell Enquiry.
Jim is passionate about shaping the future of fire safety through both education and research. He has a strong commitment to bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application, ensuring students are not only well-versed in fire safety principles but are also prepared to tackle real-world challenges. Jim actively collaborates with industry professionals to keep the curriculum aligned with the latest regulations and emerging technologies. His teaching approach emphasises critical thinking, leadership, and hands-on learning, equipping students with the skills needed for leadership roles in fire risk management and safety. Additionally, he plays a key role in mentoring students and fostering a learning environment that encourages innovation and excellence.
Jim joined us after 33 years of experience in the Fire and Rescue Service, where he combined operational command and control with fire safety management, offering students a unique blend of practical firefighting knowledge and fire safety expertise. His extensive experience in operational firefighting and strategic fire safety planning allows him to bring real-world scenarios into the academic environment, providing students with a deeper understanding of both immediate response and long-term fire safety management. This combination of practical insight and academic rigor helps prepare students for the complexities of fire risk assessment and fire safety leadership in their careers. Additionally, Jim’s experience in knowledge management and data analysis enhances the learning process by integrating up-to-date methodologies for improving fire safety practices.
